Name: Kerry Staehler

Brief personal introduction:

I work at Wittenberg-Birnamwood High School as a technology education teacher. My area of concentration is manufacturing. This is mainly a metals shop with welding, machine tool, sheet metal and foundry equipment.

Overview of content/topic level of unit plan:

  • The subject is manufacturing and the grade level is 10th-12th grade.
  • The topic of the unit is product development, this would include developing a real life product that could be manufactured and sold to the public.
  • The project idea is to have students brainstorm, problem solve and develop a product that can be manufacture in our shop using the same process that industry goes through to get a product to the consumers.
  • My main concern is motivating my students to follow the proper steps in the product development process. This becomes an issue because the process requires high level thinking and problem solving skills. The majority of my students are hands on learners and easily become distracted or disengaged when required to use these skills. How can I get these students to buy into this idea and get them motovated to see this project through?
